Peek at My Weeks (March 29-April 11)

It might be time to catch up. I haven't been posting lately because all this staying at home has made me feel as though my days are carbon copies of the days before, but that's not entirely the case. And, I don't want to let these posts get away from me completely. I like having them here for my own personal record as well as to show you what I've been up to. So, without further ado, let's get to it!
After a bit of a sit on the couch on Sunday morning, Pat and I finally decided to get out of our funk and tackle more of the old burn pile. It was hot and miserable, but so good to get out and move around for a bit. As usual, I kept my eyes trained for any cool bits to add to my found object collection. The above was my haul: an old wind chime, a marble, part of a door hinge, and whatever the wheel-like thing is. Score!

On Monday, I braved the grocery store and a few other errands. It was upsetting to see how few of the things I needed were available at the store. But, I also celebrated finding some items that I didn't think I'd find (cans of beans!)
When I couldn't find any ground meat for the enchiladas I had planned for dinner, I did discover that the Beyond Meat crumbles were on sale. So, I took that as an opportunity to try them. The taste was good, but the texture was a tad off for my niece and myself. That may have been due to me accidentally defrosting them when it's recommended that you don't.

Tuesday and Wednesday were spent nailing down my idea for #The100DayProject and knocking out chores. But, on Thursday, I hammered out another idea.
These fun earrings had been inspired by something I saw on TV. I couldn't shake the inspiration. I recorded a video of my process, but now need to find a way to get my videos uploaded. (Our internet here in the country is horrible!)

Part of my mornings the past few weeks have been spent "kicking bamboo." That's the technique and term we use to keep the spreading bamboo on the property from spreading to other areas. While surveying an area for the bamboo shoots, a specific scent caught my attention.
Honeysuckle! That sweet aroma gave me flashbacks of my childhood. I said something to that effect on Facebook and had many of my friends agree that it's a nostalgic scent.

Pat and I were determined to finish clearing the burn pile area and made some wonderful headway on Saturday.
This picture may mean nothing to you, but that entire brown area had been covered with bamboo and weeds, which made it hard to get to the junk (mostly old carpeting) that the previous owners had tried to burn out there.

Of course, I also found some treasures.
Those rusty bits and glass may mean nothing to some, but they're worth more than gold to me!

I also spent a good chunk of the day working to re-stock my Bead Box. You'll get to see what's new in it soon! Actually, doing yard work and Bead Box stocking was how I spent Sunday too! By Monday, relaxing was on my mind.
Pat has been working SO HARD to get the pool ready for the season. And, it's finally clear enough to get in. But, it's still FREEZING cold. When it's like this, we like to float. However, we believe that a trip out to the store buy new floats wouldn't do any of us any good, so I worked on Monday to clean the old ones that were still in fair condition.

Speaking of being ready for the season, I needed a bacon cheeseburger. While it would have been so much better on the grill, I did my best with a cast-iron skillet.
Oh, and I tried my hand at making French Fries in the air fryer. They were okay - a few of them needed a little more time.

In addition to kicking bamboo each morning, it's blackberry season here. So, I've been walking the property for the berries.
Delicious! My morning walking, kicking, and collecting routine has been one of the most repetitive ones the past few weeks. But, it's also been SO GOOD for me to get outside and get a little exercise and fresh air. And, the practice of it is also a bit meditative - except for when the blackberry briars attack.

By Tuesday, our pile of recycling was out of control, and I had to make a trip to the bins. Just as I finished loading up my car, I noticed a little bird hop out from under my hood. On inspection, I found that she had built a nest there.
It wasn't just any old nest either. It was one of the prettiest nests I've ever found - loaded with skeleton leaves, a feather from another bird, and five tiny eggs. I was absolutely in tears when we moved it to a spot nearby, knowing that the mother would likely not be back for it. And, she wasn't. I'm devastated about the whole thing.

Tuesday was also the start of #The100DayProject and my project - #MakeArtDontFakeArt in which I'm working with a different material from my stash each day in an attempt to actually USE THEM!! I'll do a little roundup of what I've made so far a little farther down this post.

On Wednesday, I was determined to get some organization done around the house. The drawers that contain my findings in my bead cabinet were OUT OF CONTROL!!
I was having a hard time telling what I have and what I need. So, parts of Wednesday and Thursday were spent getting those six drawers in order. I also tackled my kitchen pantry. You have no idea how long a few items had been expired. Oops!

I spent a few minutes that afternoon relaxing by the pool and enjoying Pat's progress on getting it all clean and pretty!
Isn't that a sight to warm your heart?

While going on my morning walk about the property on Thursday, I spied what I thought was a small twig hung up on my satsuma bush.
Nope, that's the caterpillar of a Ginat Swallowtail Butterfly who is cleverly camouflaged! I almost flicked him off the bush. But, since I love me some butterflies and the satsuma didn't bloom this year, I let him be. And, after the nest disaster, I needed to just leave well enough alone.

I needed a bit of a break in my routine. So on Friday - I made cupcakes.
For a pop of color, I added sprinkles!

Speaking of a pop of color, on Saturday morning, as I began my walk routine, this pop of color jumped out at me.
I have no idea what kind of bird this is from. But it was a tiny feather and a great surprise to start the day.

As for how my #The100DayProject has gone
Day 1: Paper, Thin Scrapbook
I took some of the uglier scrapbook paper that I had on hand and altered both sides with a variety of techniques. It took up most of the day!

Day 2: Stamps, Texture
I added texture stamps to scrap papers to make them perfect for adding to a junk journal or just collaging with them.

Day 3: Paint, Dylusions
Somehow I always overlook the bright Dylusions paints in my stash. I made a point to pull them out with some stencils and more of the scrap papers. It was messy but so fun!

Day 4: Ephemera, Map
I've got quite a collection of maps that never seem to work their way into my work. So, I took a large one and altered one side with black and white acrylic inks.

I also used a rust-dyed one in my new junk journal. The pages of the journal were made with many of the papers from the previous days and I used the technique I learned from Roben Marie's Free Transitions Journal Workshop.

Day 5: Ink, Lindy's Sprays
I lucked up a few months ago and scored a ton of the Lindy's Stamp Gang sprays at an estate sale for a steal! But, I haven't sprayed all of them yet. So, I did just that by laying out a variety of papers on the backside of the altered map and spritzed and sprayed all day long - allowing the inks to dry before switching out the papers. It was another messy, but fun process.

While many of my days have felt repetitive, having #The100DayProject to play with each day, has definitely made my creativity snowball as of late. I can't seem to focus on just one project before I'm ready to hop to another. But, I suppose that's better than the alternative. And, it goes to show that Being Creative Breeds More Creativity.

To help you get inspired to be creative, here are some things I've found online lately:

  • My friend, Rosantia of Bairozan's Blog, shared her Planet Bead Tutorial for those of you looking to expand your wire-wrapping skills.
  • There are so many possibilities once you master these DIY Beaded Hoop Earrings from Jewelry Making Journal.
  • The Jewelry-Making division of Craft Gossip has a roundup of Lava Bead Jewelry Making Tutorials. Now, I may need to see if I got rid of all those lava beads I used to have!
  • I know I've got some wood beads floating around here. And, this DIY Marbled Wood Bead Keychain might be the perfect craft for them.
  • Polymer clay is a craft supply with which I've struggled for years. While I know I couldn't make anything that looks like these Clay Tropical Flower Earrings, the author does a great job of making it look so easy!
  • Interweave was kind enough to share a list of 10 Free Jewelry Making Projects for you to do while you're at home.
  • If you're like me and just have TONS of paper supplies, you might want to Make Your Own Notebooks with Scrapbook paper.
  • Sadie Seasongoods always has some great ideas. For those of you looking to upcycle some of the things you just have laying around, check out her roundup of 40 Crafts with Waste Materials and Household Supplies.
  • I think this Dollar Tree Foil Tray Sunflower Tutorial caught my attention because I actually have a few of those trays sitting in the craft room right now!
  • If you've never taken a gander at the Epbot blog and you considered yourself any kind of geek, you really need to explore her site! The other week she shared this list of 10 Fun Craft Kits that you can order to entertain yourself while at home.
  • Moois Van Me always shares some great earring tutorials. This one that she calls DIY Kokrobite includes some great ideas for how to deal with a bead that has a too-large hole.
  • I'm always blown away with some of the amazing things people do with resin. This Ocean Inspired Resin Bangle Tutorial makes it look pretty easy to create a beachy bracelet.
  • Somehow, I've never stumbled on the Jewelry Headquarters YouTube or Blog. But, when a friend posted her version of their Leather Infinity Links, I had to go check them out. The video tutorial is short, concise and just happens to be a skill I was wondering about. WIN!!
Alright, this post is WAY long. And, if you've stayed with me all the way through it, I thank you! What are you doing to stay busy at home?

Art Journaling You May Have Missed

When I'm not making jewelry, you can usually find me throwing everything else in the craft room at an art journal. Some of those pages get shared on YouTube fairly often, but it's easier for me to just share those on a month-to-month basis here on the blog. Here's a look at what I shared in March. If you click on the pictures/links, you'll be redirected to the video that shows how I created each of the pages.

You may have already seen this one, and it's not technically an art journal page, but I don't think the art journal police will mind if I throw it in for good measure.

Oh, and I have to thank all of you who follow me on YouTube. I just hit 1,000 subscribers!!!
WHAT!?

So THANK YOU if you're one of the ones following me. And, if you're not, please do. I'm considering a celebratory giveaway.

April Challenges and Inspirations

Since most of us are heeding the call to stay home and protect ourselves and everyone else, it's nice to have something to look forward to doing; like an art challenge. Admittedly, I participate in a couple of these challenges and inspirations each month anyway, but they mean so much more right now when it's tough to go anywhere and do anything outside of the home.

The first one I'm going to mention needs more of an introduction than the simple bulleted list I usually do. It's The100DayProject. If you're on Instagram, you've likely seen mention of this project. It starts each April 7th (That's TODAY!) and runs for 100 days. The purpose is to explore your creativity for 100 days in any form you see fit and share your creative explorations online to inspire others. This will be my fourth year participating in the project. In 2017, I used the hashtag #Make100Earrings and did just that! In 2018, I decided to simply alter anything I could with #Altering100. And, last year, it was all about searching our property for the wild and wonderful for #SilverloxFinds. In fact, I still use that tag when I find something fun here since it was such a big hit.

This year, I wanted to work on using some of the many art supplies I have hoarded for my art journaling. There are so many things that I have just never used. It's time for me to change that in some small way. I even created a spreadsheet by listing ten general supplies, then ten somewhat specific materials that I should try to use under each of those general ones. I'll pick one material each day and use it. Since being an artist is about actually using your materials and not just collecting them, I'm going to use the tag #MakeArtDontFakeArt this year. It looks like a couple of people have used that tag previously, but not in years. So, I'm grabbing it!

Like I said, the project starts today. You can join in with us or start whenever you like. It's such a creativity boost. And, gives you something to look forward to each day. I know I'm biting at the chomp to get started.  Will you be participating? I'd love to follow along!

Now, for the semi-monthly challenges that I often mention.
  • Erin from Earrings Everyday is back at it with another We're All Ears Challenge for us. This month, she's selected HOME as the inspiration and has asked, "What does Home mean to you?" The reveal will be April 17th.
  • I always love what Sarajo and Eric throw at us for the Honey Do List. This challenge began with Eric giving photos to Sarajo for jewelry-design inspiration, and now she shares those with us. The photos are ones Eric has taken himself and are often from one of their travels. I'm loving the ornate lock that is this month's photo-inspiration. Take a look and play along. The linky tool will be available for your reveal on April 20th.
  • At the Art Elements blog, Niky was given the task of selecting this month's Theme. She chose Bees! Unlike the other challenges in this list, this challenge is open to ANY art medium, but you must have a blog and sign up by commenting on the original post in order to participate. The blog hop will be on April 30th.
  • At Art Bead Scene, they've been doing Art Journies with specific art from artists as the inspiration. This year's Art Journey #3 is all about the quilts of Gee's Bend. This pulls at my heartstrings since I do love me some quilts and I AM from Alabama. The main requirement for this challenge is that an art bead must be included in your piece. Make sure you read all the specifics on their blog. You have until May 8th to participate.
I'm sure there are all kinds of other challenges and prompts going on right now with so many people at home. If you know of any that I can add to my list, just let me know! Which will you be participating in?

Bead Box 7 - Reveal

This may be the fastest I've ever worked my way through one of my bead boxes. But, that's to be expected with all the time I've had on my hands, what with the staying home and all. I suppose I should start by explaining what a "Bead Box" is. It's my term for the plastic organizer I use to stock the elements for seventeen designs and take with me when I'm going to be away from home. It's mostly useful when I travel or stay at my mom's house. However, lately, I've been using it just to get some designs made. This is my seventh version of this box. There are links to all the other versions at the end of the post.
Bead Box 7 has been my favorite of the Bead Boxes to date. You can check out the details of what it was stocked with by clicking the link. Some of the pieces that came out of the box have already been listed and/or sold. Though I still have my Etsy shop open, I'm not currently listing anything new in my attempt to stay home and stay safe. The shop is open so you can take a look at what's available. If you're interested in anything, let me know, and I will be happy to reserve it for you until when things are safer. For now, let's get to the finished pieces!

I was smitten with this soldered charm I made. And, since the sentiment referred to simplicity, I kept the design simple too. This Simple Beauty Necklace can now be found on Etsy.

Again with simplicity as the focus, I picked out a couple of bead types that would work well with the bracelet bar I created from a Vintaj blank and Patinas. It wasn't listed on Etsy long before it sold.

The sheer size of the reproduction brass keys that a friend gave me meant that they only needed a little accent. The salvaged teal beads add a nice pop of color. These will be headed to my booth at Southern Antiques and Accents (SAA) when the shop is able to re-open.

If you've visited here recently, you've likely already seen this guy! I was pleased as punch when the Art Elements theme for March was Gnomes as I knew it would be the perfect opportunity to show off this Butterfly Gnome Necklace. He'll eventually be listed on Etsy.

This bracelet gave me more trouble than I had anticipated. I had wanted to make a sliding knot bracelet with the leather lace. However, that proved beyond my knotting skills. So, pinch crimps were added to the ends and an adjustable clasp. This bracelet will go to SAA.

I probably should have taken the picture of these hanging as the heart shape is lost under the jump rings. When I stocked the Bead Box, these were intended to be much simpler. However, I had a little trouble with that design and decided to dress them up by adding Czech glass beads and jump rings to connect the hearts to the ear wires. They will go to the antique store.

I wasn't even done making this necklace when my friend, Christina, began asking about buying it. You see, the orange and blue are the colors of Auburn University, and she's a fan! As well, the top tin on the pendant kinda matches a bracelet she has of mine too. So, as soon as this was made, she had to have it. And, she does!

I don't do a lot of bead-stringing, but simplicity was really the theme for this box. And, that's what I thought would work best for this bracelet as well. I think it came together beautifully! It will get listed on Etsy.

Speaking of simplicity! These Elegant Junk Earrings are on Etsy. I have to admit that they're a bit chunkier than I had anticipated, but I like that they make a statement even in their simple state.

I could not WAIT to get this necklace made. I loved everything about it until the gunmetal eye pins at the back of the chainstarted flaking to reveal the copper underneath. I thought I was going to have to remake it. But, when I stepped back and looked at is as a whole, the flaked metal worked perfectly with the aged feel. So, I kept it and listed it on Etsy. It sold right away. I'm going to miss it, but I know it has a good home!

When I shared the stocking of this box, I admitted that I was unsure about this design. But, once I had it all together, I realized just how cute it is. This Berry Nice Necklace is on Etsy. And, yes, I HAD to name it that. It makes me giggle.

These last several pieces are all probably going to get listed on Etsy. We'll see if I change my mind before then.
Designing this piece gave me a world of trouble. And, now that it's together, I'm still not sure about it. I know that it will appeal to a certain client, but I'm not sure if that client is one of mine.

This necklace was all about just finding beads that would match the pretty flower on the shield. It came together quickly and easily. It's a lightweight necklace that will be fun to wear.

GAH! This necklace is just too cute! I love the flirty jar and the sparkles from the crystals. It's awesome.

Though I had forgotten what my original intent was for these elements, I think they came together quite well. This bracelet is a fabulous reminder to just take a deep breath when things get crazy.

I couldn't help but pair those colorful glass beads that look like watercolor splotches with the 'artistic' soldered pebble. I think it's a lovely little necklace.

This necklace came together better than I envisioned. Really, I was just using up some extra beads from another piece as I didn't know what to do with that hornet pendant. I like it so much.

And, that's it for the seventh version of my Bead box. Here are the links to my other bead boxes if you're interested in what else came out of it

Which of the new pieces is your favorite?
I'm looking forward to stocking up another box soon. Stay tuned to see what I have planned.

Peek at My Week (March 22-28)

How are ya hanging in there? All this social-distancing and self-isolation is making me a little batty. But, I realize it's for the best. And, I really hope you're out there making good choices, washing your hands, and staying healthy. Let me give you a peek of what I've been doing with myself this week to keep busy.
Sunday started off cloudy like Saturday, but the afternoon turned beautiful. So, we headed outside to get started on some yard work. On the way to the pole barn to get our tools, I spotted this little bunch of clover flowers and couldn't resist snapping their picture. Don't they just make you smile?

As Pat helped me trim away the bamboo and weeds in the old burn pile, we discovered this beauty of a bird's nest. We waited several hours before removing it to make sure it wasn't occupied. I was mesmerized by the craftsmanship. The outer layers are made of small sticks and twigs. Then, there's a layer of leaves. Finally, the inside is a comfy layer of straw and grass. It's beautiful!

On Monday, I took my niece in Mobile to the dentist for a root canal. Afterward, we picked up lunch and hung out before deciding to get a little crafty in the kitchen.
Y'all! I forgot how easy it is to make rice crispy treats. We added M&Ms for an extra level of yum.

Tuesday was all about catching up on chores and errands. I did get this beauty of a necklace into the shop too.
It's already sold!

I've been walking the property in the mornings to kick the bamboo shoots. It's the only way we've been able to keep bamboo from taking over the backyard. And, it's good for me to get outside and move around a little. Plus, I get to find treasures like this while I'm out there.
On Wednesday morning, the bright blue of this tiny feather stopped me in my tracks.

I let the beauty of it carry on through my day as I worked on both some jewelry and a page in one of my art journals.
I was tickled that they ended up with a similar theme. But, I shouldn't have been surprised as both the tag and the sticker are Tim Holtz products.

Once I got some business handled and lunch taken care of on Thursday, I let myself give in and picked loquats for jam-making.

In the process of cleaning and chopping the fruit, I remembered why I was so hesitant. It takes forever to process loquats. But, once it was all said and done, I think it was probably worth it.
Mmmmm, Jam.

Friday is always big-chores-day for me. I knocked out as much as I could before lunch and was ready for something yummy. Pat and the niece wanted leftovers, but I was in the mood for something...lighter.
A snack plate seemed perfect. And, ohmyggodness, it was so good!

After a little more work, I grabbed a beer, some watercolor supplies, and my phone and headed outside for a mini Instagram concert from one of my favorite music artists.
I've been seeing more and more of these little performances, and they warm my heart.

Saturday was all about the Gnome Reveal for the Art Elements Theme Challenge.
It was a beautiful day outside, but I was feeling crummy. So, we stayed inside and indulged in a couch-day. As busy as I've been lately, I think it was well-deserved.

I hope you're allowing yourself to indulge just a little too. If you're looking for some inspiration, here's what I found over the week.

That's it for me this week. I just finished all my shopping for the week and hope to spend the rest of it hunkered down deep in my craft room - or out wandering the property. I hope you're making the most of this unusual period in time. What's inspiring you right now?

NEW website (and blog to go with it)

Hey y'all!! I've got some news. It's great, but also bittersweet. After almost NINETEEN years here on Blogger/Blogspot, I'v...
