October Challenges & Inspiration

As much as I love a good challenge, getting to work on any of them last month was a huge fail for me because of the hurricane. I have to be honest, I'm coming to hate that excuse. But, I'm doing what I can to look ahead and get back on track. And, that includes possibly working on a challenge or two. So, here are the ones I've found.

  • Sarajo and Eric have issued another great challenge for the Honey Do List. Eric's picture is Halloween appropriate, and I already have an inkling of an idea. . . maybe. The reveal is set for October 26th, but Sarajo usually leaves the linky open for a while (if you have any delays yourself.)
  • Over at Art Elements, Jennifer issued this month's theme of Gothic that you can interpret any way you wish in any medium. And, you can submit your contribution in the Art Elements Community theme album any time over the month.
  • I've seen other artists mention the Halcraft Pretty Palettes challenges before, but didn't ever see it out there anywhere. So, I finally did a search for it. Each month, they have a palette and an array of their beads and materials that you can purchase to participate. Even if you don't want to buy, I think the palettes are pretty inspiring.
  • And, finally, Art Journey 7 at Art Bead Scene is still going on for a few more days if you're interested in playing along there too. I'm sure there will be a new one announced very soon. I'll try to add that to this list when that happens.
  • NEW! Divya from Jewels of Sayuri pointed me toward Nicholas Wilton's Art2Life Creative Breadcrumbs Challenge. You'll need to sign up for this interesting, free challenge that runs Oct. 19-23.
And, that's it - for now. Let me know if you know if any other challenges or at least what's been inspiring you lately.

Peek at My Week (Oct. 4-10)

 It's been a roller-coaster of a week! Take a peek.

At some point last week, I decided to actually try the technique of drawing with my left (non-dominant) hand. Apparently, it's a method to make you looser and free up your mind. It TOTALLY worked. In fact, I tried switching hands a few times and discovered that I really preferred the sketchy left-hand-drawn results.

I found myself drawing those faces over and over and, it took a while to get motivated to much else on Sunday. I finally broke down and cleaned up the craft room some so that it wasn't making me crazy. Pat worked out on clearing out more of the fallen trees.

It kills me that this big, old magnolia didn't make it through the storm.

With a clean craft room, I actually accomplished a few things on Monday. And, started on something in one of my art journals.

This bit of collage, gesso, etching, and texture paste was just the beginning of the page. But, it kept me busy and distracted as we began frantically watching the Gulf as Delta had us in its cone.

An impending hurricane meant that my mood deteriorated into panic, disbelief, and on-the-verge-of-tears on Tuesday. I distracted myself with chores and got the oil changed in my car in case we needed to evacuate. We also made sure the chickens were fed and watered. While outside, I noticed that the popcorn tree was in the state that gave it its nickname.

Weird, right?

In the afternoon, I distracted myself by finishing up my art journal spread.

It's a bit chaotic, much like I felt.

By Wednesday, it looked like we might be in the clear for the storm, though I was concerned about the Louisiana residents that have just suffered through Hurricane Laura. But, knowing we were likely safe helped me relax a little. I turned my attention to business and took a few new items up to the booth at Southern Antiques and Accents.

And, I had the itch to carve a couple of stamps and try punching their impressions with a circle punch. So, I did that too.

After that, I focused on actually making jewelry for the rest of the afternoon.

I awoke Thursday with the inspiration to combine watercoloring and collaging with tissue paper. However, I made myself wait until I finished all the pieces from Bead Box 9 to try it out. Before making dinner, I played with the idea.

This isn't exactly what I had in mind, but pretty close!

Getting jewelry pictures taken had been on my to-do list all week, but that's part of the reason I made myself finish the bead box. I knew it was supposed to rain Friday afternoon so I took advantage of the overcast morning to finally get that knocked off the list.

After that, I did a few chores that just had to be done.

Saturday was super lazy. I was pretty much home alone all day as Pat had a gig and the niece was out of town. We got one of the bands from Delta that morning.

And, for the rest of the day, I simply puttered around the house doing a little art and watching college football. My main obsession was making these doodle roses that I learned in one of the Life Book 2021 Taster Sessions.

Pat made it home just a bit after the kickoff of our Alabama game. It was a hard-fought victory over Ole Miss, and we were exhausted after watching it. So, that ended our week.

I'm happy I'm starting to find my creative mojo and hope I can gear it toward more jewelry-designs soon. Here's some inspiration to get your creativity flowing.

And, that's it for the week. I'm pleased with how much I crossed off my list last week and only hope that I can stay motivated this week also. But, I'm already running behind. Here's wishing you a week of inspiration and motivation too.

Thrifty Thursday (September Thrifty Haul)

Between the storm and all the work after it, there wasn't much time to do much shopping in September. However, I did pick up a few thrifty bits while out for other errands. Here are a few of my favorites.

At the thrift store, I found these.

I lucked up on a small collection of these Fossil Watch tins. Initially, I only bought a few of them but ended up going back for the rest.

I also found what looks like a vintage sheet (though it may not be) and several small lampshades for a steal.

Oh, and there were these two BIG bags of ribbon for practically nothing.

Of course, I can't pass up deals at the Dollar Tree either.
I got these two shades of "creepy cloth" at the start of the month. I thought they might add some nice texture in my art journaling. Now, I just need to use them.

There were also several sets of these stickers that celebrate little accomplishments for adults. They totally tickle me!

And, I even bought some Halloween supplies that I used and transformed into something fun.
I saw a glimpse of this project online and knew I had to make a set of Fairy Skeletons. They were so very simple too!

I found several other steals as well, but you'll have to check out my September Thrifty Haul video to get a better look at them all.

What about you? Found any good deals lately?

Peek at My Week (Sep 27-Oct 3)

This past week seemed to just slip away from me. I had planned to get at least one other post up, but I just couldn't seem to focus long enough. We were busy this week.

Sunday started early. It was eerily foggy as we headed out to finish moving the rest of the equipment from Pat's recording studio.

It was a bittersweet goodbye to the rented space. But, since the floors needed to be replaced after over an inch of water came in during the storm and the pandemic has shuttered the doors of the studio lately anyway; it was time to move out. We're hoping another incarnation of Jellyfish Studios will come into being before too long.

In the afternoon, we began clearing out some of the smaller items from Pat's shop that was crushed in the hurricane. We had friends scheduled to come help with the larger items on Monday, but I didn't want the smaller items to distract Pat and hinder moving the larger stuff. As I toted items from the barn to a smaller shed, this beauty caught my eye.

On Monday, I snapped a few pictures for insurance before we started hauling the big tools out of the pole barn. With two trucks and a trailer, we only had to make two trips to get the bulk of everything moved. It was exhausting.
We are so thankful for the friends and family that were able to come help. Once, it was all moved, we were worthless for the rest of the day.

On Tuesday, I worked on catching up on chores and even ran to the thrift store in the afternoon.
I lucked up and found a collection of Fossil watch tins (and even went back on Wednesday to get the rest of the ones that were there.)

The temperature began to dip and actually feel good on Wednesday. I was in a bad mood and made myself do some yard work to keep my mind off things. And, puppy snuggles always help.

After taking one of the nieces to the dentist in the morning, I was still distracted and unmotivated in the afternoon. But, I found just enough drive to make a quick Halloween project. It was the first of October after all!

I was away from home all day on Friday to spend some time with my mom. Plus, it was Senior Night at the football game. Our senior was recognized before the game and played beautifully in the halftime show.

After that late night, I felt super lazy on Saturday and basically just watched college football all day. I did take a break to sort a few items in the craft room as the messy state of it was driving me CRAZY.
I do love when things are in rainbow order!

Despite not feeling very motivated, I was still able to find loads of inspiration to share with you.

And, this post suddenly got way longer than I expected. I'm hoping to find time to create more this week, but it looks like there's another storm headed our way, so we'll see. I hope you have a fabulous week!!

Peek at My Weeks (Sep 13-26)

It's been a wild few weeks, and I keep putting off this review of it for one reason or another. But, it must be done. So let's get to it.

On Sunday the 13th, I took care of some storm prep since it looked like Hurricane Sally was headed in our general direction - more toward New Orleans, but we wanted to be safe. I also worked on and off in the craft room, finishing up my Soul Food journal that was made as part of an online class from Tiffany of Southern Gals Designs.

Much of the following day was spent on more hurricane prep.

While we thought we would be on the outer edge of the storm, we knew it was wise to be cautious and somewhat prepared. We weren't ready at all.

Though the storm didn't hit until early Wednesday the 16th, we stayed home all of Tuesday and watched the weather. We were awakened on Wednesday to the tremendous sounds of a hurricane over our house. You can read more about that experience and the days following it on my Hurricane Sally in Silverlox post.

We've been spending a portion of every day since the storm on some sort of clean-up or recovery. The first few days were really rough and had my spirits down. But, I reminded myself to try to find the beauty, even in the smallest things. As we cleaned a portion of the yard on Sunday, the 20th, I spotted this fungus-covered branch under a massive pile of other debris. It spoke to me.
That evening, our power was restored.

With electricity back on so I could see, I spent much of Monday morning cleaning the house. Then, I helped Pat in the yard in the afternoon. As I mourned over the downing of my massive magnolia tree, this cluster of beauty berries caught my eye.
I just love that hue!

Wednesday brought more chores and yard work and an expensive estimate for tree removal. But, this ladybug brightened my day.
I made my first trip to restock groceries on Wednesday. I also worked on some jewelry and art in the afternoon. That absolutely helped soothe my soul. I'm not exactly sure where Thursday went. I accomplished most of the small tasks on my to-do list, so it was productive I suppose.

Friday was the first of several rough days of moving out of Pat's recording studio. But, our new tractor was delivered. And, that should help with some of the yard work moving forward.
As a cherry-on-top to the day, the new season of the Great British Bake Off (or Baking Show) began on Netflix. (WOOHOO!)

After moving more items from Pat's studio on Saturday, I took a little time to just PLAY in my art journal.
It was nice to have a creative release.

And, there was Alabama Football on the TV in the evening!!

So, yeah...that's been my last two weeks - all kinds of crazy with snippets of joy scattered about.

Check out some inspiration I've found over the past two weeks.

And, that's been my last two weeks. There's still so much cleanup to be done on the property, but I think we've finally moved everything into storage that needs to be moved, and that's a relief! What are you thankful for this week?
