Peek at My Week (Dec 8-14)

Wow, I don't even know what happened to this past week! I've been frantic to get as much ready for Christmas as possible so that I can spend some of next week enjoying the holiday spirit.
The above tree picture is really the only one from my camera roll that I can share with you as most of the others are finished gifts or gift ideas or gifts-in-progress or projects I'll share here later. To compound things, I had a little touch of chest congestion that took me down for a day or two. So, my tree is the only peek you're getting this week. That's weird because I still haven't shared the tree on other social media. I guess I better get to that too.

I was able to find a little inspiration over the week, though most of it is also Christmas gift or decorating related. You can definitely tell what's on my mind right now!

So, that's it from me this week. I'm hoping to finish up the shopping in the next day or two and then really focus on enjoying the rest of the holiday season. I hope the lead-up to the holidays (no matter what you celebrate) is treating you well and is full of much joy. Have a magical week!

Low-Cost Wire Organization

I've struggled for years with how to manage and contain all my loose wire. If you've seen how I age wire for jewelry-making, you know that I end up with lots of short lengths of wire. My previous method was to simply use clothespins to clip the wires together and store it all in a zip-top bag.  However, that wasn't effective at all as the wire often slipped from the pins as well as punctured the bag. I needed to find a new method and necessity aided my drive to make better wire organization happen.
A quick trip to the dollar store and a few minutes of my time were all it took to wrangle all those wild wires.

All I bought was: a three-ring binder, dividers, page protectors, and labels. It cost me all of four dollars to get my loose wire under control.

To make sure the binder stays closed, I even made my own closure with felt and some adhesive hook-and-loop (velcro) material.

The above pictures make the project pretty self-explanatory, but if you want a better look at my whole thought-process as well as the "Before", I did make a video on creating my own inexpensive Wire Organization.
Now, I just need to figure out how best to store all the wire that's still on spools.
Got any ideas?

Peek at My Week (Dec. 1-7)

Looking through my pictures of the past week, it seems I may have overcommitted myself to the challenges and inspirations for this month. It almost feels like that's all I've been doing. But, keeping myself creatively busy is something I don't want to ever complain about. So, I won't.
After going out for breakfast on Sunday, Pat and I decided to get a Christmas Tree. We haven't had a full-size, real one in years for one reason or another. But, since the niece is living with us, we decided to change that this year. We waited to decorate it until she got off work, but I'm still not ready to share it dressed. Somehow, I have almost no handmade Christmas ornaments. And, I want to change that before I call her done. But, first, I have to make time to make ornaments. EEK!

Monday was packed full of the usual chores and catching back up from the weekend. But, on Tuesday I made sure to knock out as much as I could as I was staying the night at my mom's house. I tackled a stamp carving for Carve December.

And, I allowed myself a little time to work on my spread for Kasia's Advent Calendar before I headed across Mobile Bay.

I didn't get much sleep at my mom's before we had to rise early to be at the hospital for her outpatient procedure.
Everything went well, and we were back at her house before lunchtime.

That meant I could get back home before it got too late.
Kasia's Advent Calendar asked us to take a walk to get inspired and enjoy nature. It was serene and beautiful in Silverlox Woods. We ended the day by having dinner out with friends.

There was a lot on my list on Thursday, but I still made time for my challenges.

While I was supposed to use items I had collected during my walk the previous day in my Advent journal, I couldn't bear to take apart this beautiful arrangement.
In the afternoon, I started knocking out a little Christmas shopping (finally!)

I woke up excited on Friday because my video for the Advent YouTube Hop from the Live Art Journaling and Self Development Group was live.
It's all about using erasers as stamps (carving them too).

I spent a bulk of Friday afternoon baking cookies for a Christmas Party on Saturday.
I'd been wanting to make these Chocolate Crackle Cookies for years. They were harder than I thought, but man, they're good!

Saturday was full of catching up on some of the challenges I had skipped. Seriously, I've over-committed myself! But, at least I feel productive.

Before I had to leave for the Christmas Party, I started on a super-secret project.
If it works out as I want, I'll share it later. If it doesn't, you'll never see me mention it again! Ha!!

Even with a busy week, I did find a few bits of inspiration to share:

I hope you had an inspired week and that the coming one is full of joy!

December Challenges and Inspirations

Before the busiest month of the year gets away from us, I want to go ahead and share the challenges and inspirations I've found for December. There's quite a few this time around as everyone seems to want to finish the year with a bang.

Let's start with the ones that are already underway and that I've already mentioned
  • Kasia of Wanderlust's Everything Art has offered up a Free Advent art journal experience with daily video inspiration from her. The videos are short and the exercises go quickly (if you want), so you have plenty of time to catch up!
  • Carve December 2019 has begun! There are no prompts this year. While this is often a daily challenge, Julie Fei-Fan Balzer has made it clear that there is no pressure to carve every day. She simply encourages you to try to make a few stamps during the month. Get inspired for it by checking out all the carved stamps so far on Instagram.
  • There's another inspiring Advent experience (and giveaway) going on right now. The Live Art Journaling and Self Development Group on Facebook is having a YouTube Advent Hop. You need to join the group to see the full list of links for each day. AND, I'm part of it. If you're a member of the group and subscribe to each of the YouTube participants and comment on each video, you'll be entered for the giveaway. I'm Day 6!
  • Lesley has issued December's Theme for the Art Elements Challenge and it's Handmade Christmas. I'm sure you're handmaking something for the holidays, so it would be a breeze to join in! It's a blog hop and is open to any medium, but you do need to sign up on their blog post to be added to the list. The hop is on Dec. 28th.
  • Over at SJ Designs Jewelry, she's shared the photo inspiration that her husband Eric has issued her for the Honey Do List. It's an interesting one. The reveal is set for Dec. 30.
  • Art Bead Scene's Art Journey #9 is titled Snow Falling Softly. You'll have to take a look at the inspirational pieces of art and include an art bead. Make sure to use you submit your entry(s) before Dec 31st.
How's that for ending the year with creativity?
I do hope you'll play along with at least one of these! Let me know if you know of any other challenges or inspiration I may have missed.

Art Journals in November

I often share my art journal pages through process videos on YouTube but wait to share them all here on the blog in one post each month. This is that post. Take a look at the finished pages and head over to the videos to watch how I created each of them.

And, for a little something different, I participated in a bit of a YouTube hop thing that involved me answering 10 Crafty Questions. To have my hands doing something while you listen to me answer them, I created a bracelet and a quick journal page.

Make sure you're following the CraftyHope YouTube Channel so you don't miss any of my other videos! There's a little bit of everything in the mix.
And, please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions.

Peek at My Week (Nov 24-30)

Did you finish November with a bang!? I feel like I might have. The hubs had the whole week off, and I spent it trying to balance work and fun. It worked out better than I had anticipated.
First up, this week has been full of the leaves changing. Most dramatic has been my Japanese Maple. The leaves are falling now, and I expect it will be "bald" for the next few months.

We worked on clearing some of the trails on Sunday before having lunch down by the bay. It was a slow afternoon, but we made the most of the Fall evening by trying to get our first fire of the season going.
Despite buying some firewood, the rest of the wood was slightly damp, so we had a hard time with it. But, it was nice to spend a little time outside.

After knocking out chores and working on my project for the SJ Honey Do List on Monday, Zoe and I took a walk through the newly cleared trails and checked out the ones that need to be cleared. I had spied quite a few of these ghost flowers the day before, but this bunch tucked into the mossy roots of a tree really got my attention.

Since I didn't want to stumble through the uncleared trails any longer, Zoe and I ventured down the street. Once again, my attention was drawn to something on the ground.
It's some sort of trash the neighbors had left out, and I believe it's the base to something. But, to me, it was a large button! I had to snap the picture.

After a meatless dinner of fried rice and spicy peanut butter tofu, we went to the movies to see Doctor Sleep. Fun!

I started Tuesday well with a little solitude and sketching outside.

Once again, I was drawn to the stunning color of the maple leaves.
I thought the day was going to go off without a hitch, and my list was thorough enough that it should have, but I was distracted. We had lunch out on the river then played some disc golf, so my plans fell to the wayside. Again, we he was on vacation.

Wednesday was full of helping my mom prepare for our Thanksgiving feast. Most of my work was done then, so I had very little to do on Thursday.
It's always my job to open and slice the canned cranberry sauce - one of my grandmother's favorites. I also made some green beans but had few other responsibilities.

My niece's cat, Milo, was well-dressed for the occasion.

Back at the house, we made another go at a bonfire.
Though it doesn't look it in this picture, we were much more successful with this one.

On Friday, I looked forward to one of my favorite lunches: leftover turkey sandwiches! But, I kept myself busy with chores and began working on a project for a friend.
I hope it comes together the way she's envisioning it.

I worked on that project into Saturday, but my mind was elsewhere.
Alabama's big rivalry football game was in the early afternoon. Alas, we lost by three points and our chance for the playoffs was lost with it. But, there's always next year. It wasn't the way I wanted the weekend to go.

At least I have loads to hold my attention. A new month upon us means that there's all kind of new challenges. And, it's the last month of the year, meaning most of us want to finish the project with a bang. I'm probably attempting more than I should for this holiday season, but why the heck not!?
First, Kasia of Everything Art is offering up a Free Advent Calendar art journaling adventure. AND, it's time for #CarveDecember from Julie Fei-Fan Balzer. But, I have a feeling I won't be participating in both of those challenges everyday. It is a busy month.

Let's see the inspiration I found this month:

With Christmas coming, I'm sure I'll have all kinds of holiday fun to share with you. Since it's such a chaotic time of the year, I encourage you to stop, take a few deep breaths, and remember what's important. Now, please help me remember to take my own advice! Have a wonderful week.

DIY Fabric Tassel

Now that Thanksgiving (in America) is behind us, I'm willing to focus on working toward Christmas and all that comes with it: the parties, the presents, the music, the decorations, and the celebration itself. To kick it all off, I'm sharing a quick technique with you that can be used in a variety of ways. Learn how to make a fabric tassel!
In my example, I used recycled sari silk, but you could any variety of material: other kinds of fabric strips, ribbon, lace, or whatever you envision. And, while I ended up using my tassel as a pendant for a necklace, yours could be a Christmas ornament or even a gift decoration!

The technique is super simple, but first, you'll need to gather your supplies.
You'll need your tassel material of choice (fabric, ribbon, etc.), wire, a bead cap, scissors, and pliers (wire cutters, chain nose, and round nose).

From there, it only takes a minute or two to Make a Fabric Tassel.  Just watch me knock one out.
It really is just a matter of bending and wrapping. The bead cap simply hides some of the messiness.

The loop on the top is perfect for sliding a bit of chain through or slipping on an ornament hook.

Smaller versions would be great for earrings.

Once you have the steps down, there are all kinds of things you can do with a tassel.
Don't let your fabric and ribbon scraps go to waste!
Let me know if you have any questions about the process.
Enjoy the beginning of the Holiday Season!

Crests of Tin and Patina (Honey Do List)

Each month, Sarajo shares the photo inspiration given to her by her husband, Eric. She calls it the Honey Do List. This month, Eric gave her three photos of stained glass windows from Edinburgh Castle. I absolutely knew that I would be able to draw some inspiration from the windows but put the task aside while I worked on organizing the craft room. When I finally allowed myself to focus on the images, I immediately had an idea.

All three of the windows in the photographs included a crest of some sort. I was drawn to the shape of them and started there.
Using a stencil of my own design (cut out on a Cameo Silhouette), I traced the shape onto a flat piece of silvery cookie tin. This was probably the bottom of a tin as it is quite flat.

I used tin snips to cut out the shapes.
I also snipped off a tiny bit of each corner to tremove the sharp points.

Then, a sanding block was used to soften the edges and remove any burrs.
I also went ahead and sanded the flat surfaces (front and back) of the metal to remove some of the coatings on them in case I decided to patina the surfaces. (Spoiler Alert: I did.)

Then, I pulled out my Sizzix Big Kick and a Vintaj Embossing Die to texture the metal.
Each piece was embossed individually, and I made a point of not getting the same pattern on each of them as each of the windows in the inspiration photos were also different.

Then, it was time to color the crests with Vintaj Patinas.
I only used one coat on each piece. The colors were selected based on the dominant color in each of the inspiration photos.

Then, I had a little fun adding more interest to the shapes with a wash of alcohol ink and alcohol blending solution.
In this case, I used quite a bit of the blending solution and only a drop or two of the ink so that the color was subtle. I could always add more, but it's difficult to remove it once it's on there.

I've just uploaded a video on Using Vintaj Patinas on YouTube if you want to see some of the different ways I like to work with it.
In the video, I used mostly Vintaj metal blanks, but I'm now starting to experiment with it on my blank tin pieces like the ones I used for this necklace.

Once the alcohol ink was dry, a quick coat of sealer was added.

I also allowed that time to dry before I punched holes at the top corners with a metal punch.

Then, I turned the pieces over to decide what to do about the backs of them.

I could have easily left them as they were, but since I HAD sanded them, I decided to slightly darken them with Novacan Black Patina and seal them with Renaissance Wax.

From there; jump rings, chain, and a clasp were added to complete the necklace.
It's difficult to see the darkened patina, but I promise it's there.

I'm super pleased with how quickly this piece came together. I know it looks like a lot of steps, but it really wasn't.

And, I'm excited at how well it represents all three inspiration photos in one piece.
Thanks to Eric and Sarajo for sharing such great inspiration! I'm looking forward to seeing what they have up their sleeve for next month's inspiration.  Now head, over to SJ Designs Jewelry to see what Sarajo made!

Peek at My Week (Nov. 17-23)

This whole week, I felt like I was wading against the tide. It began beautifully enough with some puppy love.
But, I spent the rest of Sunday fairly lazily.

I guess I was resting up since I woke Monday with inspiration. It took me some time to get there since I needed to get the grocery shopping and a few other tasks first, but then it was playtime.
Something had me wanting to wrap rhinestones, encase them in a little bit of tin. It took more work than I thought, but I made it work! From there, I wanted to see if I could create a small box. And, I did! But, I couldn't figure out what I wanted to do with them, so they've been pushed aside for now.

From there, I spent much of Tuesday tackling my bag of jewelry that needed to be disassembled.

I did take a break from taking it all apart to explore the woods. And, I stumbled on this old shovelhead buried behind an old shed.

I was up before the sun on Wednesday and was fortunate enough to get to watch a couple of owls in trees near the house just before the sun came up.
I needed those moments of peace.

The rest of that day and into Thursday kept me busy sitting.
My grandmother had three appointments in that span of two days. And, there was a load of waiting around. It was frustrating. But, at least she's as healthy as she is!

Friday was house cleaning and more jewelry destruction. But, my main task was getting up to the coffee shop to upload several videos. Back at home, I couldn't help but stop to admire the color change in my Japanese Maple.
Today, it was even more vibrant, and you can bet I'll be sharing that with you next week.

On Saturday, I shared one of the uploaded videos. In this one, I answered 10 Crafty Questions while working on a few projects and there's a GIVEAWAY as part of it.
If you're interested in learning more about me, definitely watch the video!

I spent much of Saturday at my mom's house watching football and visiting with a cousin from out-of-town. Then, I binged on Downton Abbey at home while Pat played a gig. Another lazy day - oops.

I'm already running behind, so let's get to this week's inspiration:
We have a bit of a holiday week ahead of us, though my work never ends. So, I'm looking forward to a little downtime and fun this week. I hope you find some yourself!

NEW website (and blog to go with it)

Hey y'all!! I've got some news. It's great, but also bittersweet. After almost NINETEEN years here on Blogger/Blogspot, I'v...
