Peek at My Week (May 10-16)

It was a week of picture-taking for me! I'm not really sure of the reason, but I'll take it for what it is. Sunday was Mother's Day. My mom and step-dad came over (with some distancing) and we grilled burgers to celebrate the day. Before they made it over, I baked banana bread and picked some flowers to brighten the house up.
It was a really nice day.

Monday was all about knocking out my errands (grocery shopping). But, in the afternoon, I sat on the back deck and watched the birds for a while. A large woodpecker caught my eye and had me pulling out the big lens to capture him on camera.
I'm not sure when I became a birder, but I kinda dig it. My next step is to figure out how to attract other birds to the yard.  I've just been using wild bird seed and (homemade) hummingbird nectar, but I think there might be some other options to attract other birds. If you have any suggestions, let me know!

As I was prepping dinner, I noticed that some kind of bug was digging the insides of the petals from some of the flowers in my little arrangement.

Tuesday started out nicely enough. I fried up the last slices of the banana bread in a little butter for our breakfast. It was SO GOOD!
But, the day made a nasty turn when I went to take the chickens a treat and found one of the two of them dead in their run. I have to be thankful for a husband that will deal with situations like that for me.

On Wednesday, I busied myself with loads of tasks and errands. I pressed us some sandwiches for lunch and decided to add avocado to mine (no one else in the house likes avocado, so I get them all to myself. Bwahahaha!) I was delighted to discover that it was an absolutely perfect one.
That's the only bad thing about avocados, you never quite know what you'll find inside.

I was able to check off most of the tasks on my list on Thursday and even got to spend a good bit of time outside too. Zoe and I went for a walk on the trails.
They're a bit overgrown and need some work, but it still makes it fun to find fairytale-like images out there. Look at the thorns on that vine!!

I also discovered that our blueberries are ripe!

Oh, and the gardenias are going crazy right now!
I love it!

Speaking of gardenias: on Friday we got a little rain shower. While everything was still dripping, I went out to check the mail and was waylayed by taking as many pictures of the wet gardenias as I could. Here's just a couple of them.
They look almost magical!

Saturday morning had me out on the deck for my morning doodles, and the light was a little odd because of a slight mist in the air.

Over the week, we talked about getting some chicks to replace the one that had passed. So, I called around and found one store that had a few.
I'm almost giddy about having baby chicks in the house again.

Once we had them settled in Pat's office (yeah...that's where they are for the time being), we spent the rest of the afternoon out by the pool.
The temperature here has been fairly mild for May, but it's finally starting to rise. So, I'm glad I spent so much time outside while it was still comfortable. From here on, it's likely to be blazingly hot. Thank goodness for the pool!

I kept on track with my #The100DayProject all week.
Day 34 was using receipt books. I have two that I could put my hands on quickly. One is for rent payments and the other is for a hair salon. They both got buried in the collaged background of this simple page.

I bought a ton of the Amsterdam Acrylic Inks when they were on a deep clearance several months ago. But, there are still a few I hadn't touched. It was Day 35's task to use a few them. I chose three of the brightest colors (Reflux Green, Yellow, and Orange) to create a spread.

I wasn't completely feeling creative on Day 36. But, with the help of an Art Journal Bingo game that I found on Instagram, I was able to create first the papers with ink sprayed through stencils and then this spread.

For Day 37, I needed to use one of the key stickers that I've had in my stash for AGES. I moved quickly through making this page, and it mostly works.

Day 38 was all about using some of the eco-dyed fabric that I haven't touched since it was made several years ago. There were some bumps along the road of making this page, but it really taught me that it's important to try new things to get out of my comfort zone.

I had so many projects already on my desk on Day 39. So, when I saw the material was the Drywall Joint tape, I simply added it to the in-progress thank you notes that I had been working on.

Another clearance deal was Maribou Art Crayons many moons ago. They're definitely a case of "out of sight, out of mind". I used them for Day 40 and tried to experiment with them in several different ways for this art journal page.

If you're looking for some inspiration of your own, here's some I found and shared this week:
With that, my day's getting away from me. I hope you're making the most of your days too!!

Week in Review

I realized not too long ago that I take a lot of pictures throughout the week that I never seem to share much of anywhere. Instead of just letting these photos take up valuable memory space, I've decided to make an effort to share them as a weekly wrap-up. I'm hoping that these posts won't be long, just some images to show what I've been up to over the course of each week.

We started Sunday morning with a Dutch Baby. I've been wanting to make one for ages. I was pleased to see it puff up. I topped it with a slight dusting of powdered sugar and some lemon blueberry jam (not pictured). It was delish. I will be making it again for sure!

From there, we went to the Gulf Coast Renaissance Faire and Pirate Fest in Pensacola, FL. We drank mead, checked out the vendors, and watched a couple of guys joust.
Pre-joust!

I was pretty amazed that I captured this shot.

On Monday, one of my nieces to have her braces removed.
She was so happy to get them off, she even let me take her picture (though, she really didn't want to.) That should explain the half-smiles I got.

Pat worked throughout the week to fence in the front yard for the puppy.
He's totally our hero!

She's smitten with getting to be outside a bit more.

Finally, I got a pair of earrings in the CraftyHope Etsy shop.
Stick Earrings

Oh, and we rode up to Montgomery for an event yesterday but I failed to get any interesting pictures. Today starts a new week though and hopefully new adventures! This is especially true since Daylight Savings started today and we'll have more daylight in the afternoons. Yay!!

How was your week?

Weekend Wrap-up and Goal Review

I think I overdid it this weekend. It's been a really glorious two days here in south Alabama, especially for January. On Saturday we made the short trip to the beach and watched the Gulf of Mexico waves roll in for a little while.
The beauty and cleansing nature of the beach inspired us to push ourselves to take a ten mile bike ride. My butt is killing me! Today was warmer but more overcast. We headed north to check out a new disc golf course. While it was only a nine basket course, it was more hilly than we're used to playing. I definitely got yet another workout. And then when we got home, I did yard work and walked the property. I know I'll be sore in the morning. It'll be worth it though, right?

As for my goals. . .I think it was a bit overkill to check in with my progress every week. Instead, I'll try to remember to do a monthly wrap-up of them. I've already reviewed Week 1 and Week 2. Here's my rundown for weeks 3 and 4. That will finish up January. How is it February tomorrow??

Week 3
My goal and tasks for week 3 were simple.

I didn't get a picture of the daily checklist I created, but it was done. Likewise, I indeed had at least one blog entry during that time. Let me share with you my physical creations.
Above is the altered playing card I created. It was a quick and easy one. I only used a monoprint (Gelli Plate) for the background, glued on half a die cut flower, traced it, stamped the word 'breathe' onto graph paper, glued down the graph paper, traced it, and inked the edges of the card. I went for something quick because my week was absolutely insane! The pictured card is actually sitting on my journal page for the week. It was absolutely blank at the end of the week. I did fix that though (you'll see in a second).

For the jewelry, I also went the easy route and created a pair of earrings. I made these for my niece. She became Worthy Advisor (president) of her Assembly (for the International Order of Rainbow for Girls) and had a whole Japanese theme. I know these beads are probably Chinese, but she really was doing more of an Asian theme. And, the aqua blue went with the dress she was wearing. Alas, the week was so crazy that I forgot to take the earrings to her before the event. Oops!

Remember that blank page? Well...
I did a quick watercolor painting of some resemblance of my niece's dress and cherry blossoms (her flower) on Sunday. It may have been late, but it got done.

Week 4

I was sooooo looking forward to this past week. After two weeks of pure chaos, week 4 felt like it was going to be full of freedom. How wrong I was. Every day had its own tasks and errands and busy-ness that kept me from my larger goals.

Again, I won't share the blog posts I wrote over the week. I'm sure you can find those yourself.  And again, I needed quick and easy projects.

I got to my altered card first quite late in the week. I simply dabbed some Distress Ink (minis) onto my nonstick craft mat and sprayed it with a bit of water.

I quickly ran the gessoed playing card through the ink. I also ran my journal page through what was left of the ink (you'll see what became of that in a bit.)
Using a stencil with circles, I dabbed white paint onto the card with a cosmetic sponge. (I used the rest of the paint through the same stencil on my journal page.) Once the paint dried, I circled the dots with a pencil, stamped the word "Dreamy" onto the card in sepia, underlined the word with a pen, and inked the edges. Done!

I lucked up when it came to the making of the jewelry. Blue Girl Beading Co. was offering a cold connection earring class on Friday afternoon/evening. I quickly signed up.
These are the earrings I finished. They are a little rough, but I feel the lesson I learned was valuable. And, I got to cross a task off my list.

My main goal for the week was to create earring cards with my Silhouette Cameo. I was hoping to learn to use the machine better AND create something usable. I tried using some thin cardboard covered in dictionary paper. I used the settings I found recommended on another blog.
Do you see the oopsie in the above photo? Here's a closer look.

Yeah, it just didn't cut all the way through. I think there's actually two mistakes here. 1- I need to set the cutting tool higher 2 - I need to pick a less complex design. I wasn't able to make my attempt until Saturday. With the fail, I know I will have to try this again. Alas.

Lastly, I once again did not get to my journal page until Sunday. Here's its state on Sunday morning.
This was after my leftover ink swipe and white paint stenciling. I really liked it. I added dictionary text, more ink and water, more white paint, stamps, and doodles. With a Tim Holtz stamp and some doodles with a stabilo all pencil, I created the focal.

The focal stamp says "Creativity isn't in the finding of a thing but the making something with it after it is found." This is a lesson I sincerely need to learn. I have all the Friday Finds posts, but other than the post, what am I making from the finds? It's time for me to get busy!

Oh, and before I head out, I have to share some good news. We received word tonight that we have at least one offer on our other house. We'll have to make a decision in the morning, but I hope the process that comes next is a smooth one. It would be nice to be a one-mortgage family once again. Fingers crossed!!

Here's hoping your week ahead is a good one!

Hidden Craft Room Treasures

Whew, it's been a crazy month! Between my grandmother's hospital stay, Grand Assembly, and working on Creative Spark I just haven't had any time for much else. There's been no jewelry-making and only the basic house cleaning. In fact, all the time spent in the craft room has been on the computer. Today I got a chance to clear some of the clutter that's piled up around the house and in the craft room. In doing so, I discovered stock piles of supplies I've gotten and simply tossed in the craft room.
There was a large bag of goodies I'd ordered with a gift certificate from ZnetShows.

This innocent-looking box of 'beads' sent to me from my childhood best friend was hidden under my desk.

Here's a look inside that box. . .at least one of the layer of stuff. I'll try to show off the wonders inside later.

I also had a bag full of supplies we bought when we found a  discount store that was selling off the items from an Ace Hardware that had closed. It was like a toy store!

Now that I can walk through the craft room again, I can't wait to get my hands on some of these treasures and all the other amazing supplies I've had stashed away. First we're going to enjoy what's left of the weekend with a paddle in the river. But, I'm actually looking forward to Monday!

Crazy Weekend, Weekly Menu, and Recipe Review

This weekend was the official kickoff to summer in the US as Monday was Memorial Day; a day we remember those who served and died in service to our country. It was a three-day weekend for most of us, and I spent it busy!

Friday I helped one of my best friends move.
Fortunately, she had movers so there wasn't much for us to do. But, moral support and all that. . .
As I live in the direction of the beaches, I got stuck in traffic for over an hour with everyone else that was beach-bound for the weekend. At that point I started to run out of gas and had to just turn around, go to my mom's, and wait for the traffic to subside. No fun!

Much of Saturday was also spent working as we went back into Mobile to help my parents paint our old house that needs to sell.
Going West into Mobile there wasn't much traffic at all

We made it back to our side of Mobile Bay just in time to hang out with some friends at a bar-be-que and then went to check out another friend's new bar, Plow in Fairhope. It's awesome!
The crew working at Plow Saturday night. Great bunch of guys!

After all that, Sunday was slow moving for us. We did make a run by the hardware store on our way down to the beach. Waiting until Sunday afternoon meant that we didn't get much of the traffic. The weather and water was perfect when we finally made it down there. Ahhhhhh.
The water was so clear we could see fish and eagle rays without a problem.

On Monday, we took care of some tasks around the house. That meant another trip to the hardware store (wire for me!).
I got the galvanized on Sunday and the copper Monday. It's some seriously huge gauge!

We ended the day by grilling up a healthy meal (there was some chicken involved too, but these veggies were so pretty!)
There's mushrooms, squash, zucchini, orange bell pepper, onion, and garlic - all marinated. It was delicious.

We've got a shortened work week, but still plenty of busy-ness ahead. As such, the menu is a little scarce.

Breakfasts: Smoothies, Cereal, Toast w/avocado, Omelets, Blueberry waffles

Lunches: Soup & grilled cheese, Leftovers, Simple sesame noodles, bean burritoes, PB&J, Tuna Noodles, Cheese quesidillas

Dinners:
Grilled Chicken and veggie kabobs
Soup (from freezer)
Peanut butter tofu quinoa bowl with veggies (I'm making this one up and will report back)
Homemade pizza w/salad

Recipe Review

Bowtie lasagna: This was SUPER easy and such a great recipe to add your own spin to. I personally added some diced onion with the ground beef. Pat absolutely loved this, and I found it pretty tasty too.

Baked sesame tofu sticks with PB, tahini, and ginger sauce: These turned out really well. I like how firm they came out and can see using them in other recipes. I messed up the sauce as I tried to use PB2 powder instead of natural Peanut Butter. So it was a little runny no matter what I tried to add to make it work. That was my own fault and not that of the recipe though. I will definitely make these again.

Now to jump on the rest of the to do list and get on with the week. Here's hoping your week is treating you well!

Meal Plan and Recipe Review (3/31)

After consuming almost half the pan of Homemade Cinnamon Rolls yesterday, I did something I've never done before - trail riding!

Well, I did something close to trail riding. I rode my bike in the woods on flat surfaces and then pushed it up and down hills in Blakeley State Park. It was quite the workout. I'm sure I burned off all those cinnamon rolls. At least I hope I did.

Now, I'm planning for the week ahead.

Breakfasts: Smoothies, Cereal, Oatmeal/grits, Hashbrown baskets, Waffles

Lunches: Cheese quesidillas, Simple sesame noodles (crack noodles), Turkey sandwich, PB&J, Tuna noodles, Soup w/grilled cheese, Leftovers

Dinners:
Black bean burgers w/sweet potato fries
Vegetarian chili over rice
Grilled Chicken w/sweet potatoes & Caesar salad

I'm linking up my meal plan for Menu Plan Monday at I'm an Organizing Junkie.

Recipe Review

Baked Tofu:  This was a pretty easy recipe and tasted alright. I might make it again, but I just might make my own variation on it.
