Peek at My Week (May 3-9)

I feel like this past week was one of the busiest I've had since all this self-isolation, stay-at-home stuff began. I ran errands out of the house almost every day, but some of them didn't even involve getting out of the car. 

We had a super lazy day on Sunday and finally finished my button puzzle!

And, y'all should just prepare for loads of gardenia photos. I think they're one of the most photogenic flowers. I couldn't resist snapping this one with the pool in the background as I walked the property a little on Sunday.

We finished Sunday out by playing a couple of card games. One was a new one I gave Pat for his birthday. Then, it was a family favorite - UNO!

Monday meant my weekly trip to the grocery store. I was happy to discover that they had everything on my list. It really is the little things right now. Zoe and I took a quick walk through the trails to get outside. I'm trying to work out and be a little more active since I seem to be developing too many bad eating habits right now. I spotted these two odd mushrooms out in the woods. Aren't they weird?

It was also Star Wars Day!

I wore my lightsaber earrings and Pat worked on his new Lego Sets. I thought about dying some milk blue...but stopped myself and kept it low-key.

On Tuesday, I did break out the Almond Milk to try making one of those whipped coffees everyone's been posting about.

I never could get it whipped completely, but I think that was my own fault for quadrupling the recipe and using the wrong mixer for the job. I will be trying it again as it was tasty. I also tried another new recipe. Since it was Cinco De Mayo, I made a Taco Ring from the recipe an Instagram friend had shared with me. I'll likely make that again too!

On Wednesday, I knocked out some errands and chores and uploaded a few videos from the comfort of my car. Before driving back home, I decided to treat myself and make a loop by the Bay. I was tickled to see these babies waddling around the park!

Once I finished the rest of the tasks on my list, I did a little more birdwatching from the back deck while I enjoyed a beer and some beadwork. 

The weather has been oddly cooler than usual for May, but I'm not going to complain. It could be blazing and miserable instead. 

I spent a good chunk of Thursday working on a card for my mom for Mother's Day. I included it as part of my 100 Day Project so you'll get a peek of it below.

Friday was all about knocking out some serious house-cleaning. But, I also let myself go walk around on the old burn pile to look for rusty treasures.

And, I got a quick picture of Zoe when she was trying to tell me that I didn't give her enough belly rubs. Silly Puppy!

Somehow, I didn't get any pictures on Saturday, but it was overcast and a little chilly most of the day. I did indulge myself in the burn pile again. Pat let me use his big rolling magnet to pick up surface items. Then, I walked a section of the area with my metal detector. I gathered quite a pile! Just imagine another stack of rusty nails, hooks, and a hinge and you've got the idea. The absolute best part of the day, possibly the week, was that we ordered take-out from a local Mexican restaurant. We were all in fantastic moods after that meal and had no idea that it was JUST what we needed right now. So good!!

Here's what I created over the week for #The100DayProject. I'm trying to work through some of the supplies I have hoarded for my #MakeArtDontFakeArt project.

For Day 27, I was to use rub-ons. I was reminded why I don't often use them as they don't always rub-off like they're supposed to. Working on the page was nice, but I was left slightly frustrated with the material.

I combined Days 28 & 29 (cheesecloth and thick masking tape) to make the above page. Since some of the better rub-ons were still on my desk, I even used a few of them too. It turned out much better than the previous page. 

On Day 30, I was excited to use my Tombow markers. I have to admit that they've been sitting unused since I bought them. I also wanted to play with creating a brayered background. While I don't really care for this final page, I'm happy with the play and experimentation I did with the materials. I know a bit more about what I like and don't like now.

Day 31 was cardstock and the day I decided to work on a card for my mom. The photo above shows some of the elements I cut and inked. I'll share the competed card next week (probably).

On Day 32, it was all about using some of my letter and number stamps. The number ones were worked into the texture of the background while the letters made up the sentiment. Easy!

This page that was made for Day 33 is my favorite for the week. I needed to use my metallic watercolors and did so on top of the crackle paste in this spread. It's just yummy!! 

I feel like it was a pretty inspiring week for myself. I hope it was for you too. Here's some inspiration to give you a jump on the week ahead.

• In addition to milk cartons, I'm going to rescue some tin cans from the recycle bin and make at least one of these Tin Can Wind Chimes. I'll likely do my own take on it, though.

Pensacon 2015

Over the weekend, Pat and I got a chance to let out geeky flags fly and take two of our nieces to Pensacon 2015 in Pensacola, FL. This was only the second year this event has been held, but it was packed out!

I think all four of us could have spent the entire time just people-watching; there were so many amazing costumes.

I'm still not sure what this is, but it was creepy-cool.

It took a little time to get on the vendor floor as there was a line, so we got the opportunity to sit in the stands while we waited. This provided us the perfect opportunity to come up with a game plan and sit back and watch all the awesome around us.

We could see these pictures being taken of a life-size Chewy, but he was gone by the time we got on the floor. Darn!

Here's some of the view as we waited. All the people seated (more were on our right) were waiting to get on the vendor floor. Oh, and Where's Waldo? (you might be able to see him if you zoom in some!)

Once on the Vendor Floor, we stuck to our zig-zag route and perused all the wares. I got to speak to some local people I know who were vending there; Chris at Black Flame Creations (amazing Steampunk art and wearables) and Jon from Mini War Game (who I blogged about last month). Again, there was lots to take in.

This elf in chainmail caught my eye even from where we had been seated. The hours of work that must have gone into that armor. . .one can only imagine!

Another vendor stole my attention in his 'armor'. He was selling a variety of leather-goods. However those amazing chops are what caught my eye!

This gentleman made me laugh out loud as I spotted him dozing away in this skull throne.

After leaving the vendor floor, we decided to check out the Celebrity and Autograph area. We were concerned that the lines in there would be even more out of control, but it was surprisingly manageable and not overwhelming. We got the chance to actually see stars from some of our favorites: Star Trek, Star Trek the Next Generation, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Mallrats, and many more. Of course, our favorite of the bunch was Noah Hathaway who played Atreyu in The NeverEnding Story. He was a big part of the reason we decided to go to Pensacon and not some other local con, and I told him that too. Yes, we got to meet him!!

Next to him was Alan Oppenheimer who voiced Falkor, the Rockbiter, G'mork, and the Narrator in The NeverEnding Story. He was also the voice of Skeletor and Vanity Smurf. (Can you say 80s swoon!?) Actually, if you take a look at Alan's IMDB page, you'll see he's been in just about EVERYTHING. His resume is impressive to say the least. We didn't get a picture with or of him, but did get his autograph (and Noah's). Meeting these two individuals was the highlight of our day.

Once we had our fill of celebrity sightings, the four of us held a pow-wow to look over the schedule and decide if there were any other must-dos before we headed back home. There were lots of options: video game playing, parties, panels, Q&As, a costume contest, etc., but we all felt pretty fulfilled in what we had accomplished and were near exhaustion from the excitement. We caught a bite to eat down the street and headed home.

There was no Tardis to take us home (I know I'm oversimplifying the use of the tardis - forgive me), but the hour drive wasn't so bad.

I will say that we had another group of friends there who had a completely different experience from us. They went to a panel and checked out a local restaurant that was decorated for some of the parties with lots of really cool pieces. It sounds like they had a great time too, despite the fact that our paths never crossed. There was just so much to do! All in all, I think there was something there that would interest just about anyone. The Pensacon organizers should be proud of themselves and congratulated for putting on a great convention. It rocked, and I've got two nieces who declare that it was one of the best days of their lives!

Blogpocalypse: The End is near (of Google Reader, that is)

With GoogleReader going kaput as of TOMORROW, I know many people are scrambling for new ways to collect and read their favorite blogs. I decided several months ago to try out and use TheOldReader simply because it felt somewhat familiar. However, I'm seeing a lot of creatives mentioning  Bloglovin  as a popular choice so far. If you are leaning in the Bloglovin direction, please don't forget to follow my blog with Bloglovin too.

New Buttons (For the Blog)

If you're like me and read most of your blogs in a feed-reader, you don't often actually SEE the changes made on actual blogs unless the blogger mentions it. Well, I've recently made a few changes to mine that I've been wanting to make for ages so I thought I'd mention it as well as how I did it. (Oh, and it's mostly button additions, you know how I like buttons! ;)  )

The first change I made was to clean up the social media buttons on my right sidebar. If you remember, they looked something like this.

And I was able to re-vamp that into this.

Ahhhhh!

Fabulous right!? I'm guessing some of you might want to know just HOW I was able to do it. Well, with the help of the following.

1. This post from My Favorite Things on how to add social media buttons. There are actually many, many posts out there similar to this one, but her instructions seemed the most clear and easy-to-follow. 
2. The links at the bottom of this Moms Make Money post. The post itself has a video with instructions on adding the links if you want, but I just needed some free social button images. (The last link with the cute color icons was the one I used.) 
3. Photobucket. Basically, that's where you save your social button images so that you have an online link in order to put them into the code.

That's all I REALLY needed to get the changes made, but let me admit the last resource I used

4. (optional) My own limited knowledge of how to work with HTML from my time working at a website design company (though I just wrote the copy for the websites, I DID NOT write the code.) As well, my husband is a software programmer/coder extraordinaire and was able to help me get the buttons cooperate just the way I wanted them to.

Now, that's not all the changes I made.

• I also added a widget so that you can follow the CraftyHope blog by e-mail. I know that is becoming a popular option lately. Check out the widget just above my new flashy social media buttons on the right. This was super easy to add in Blogger. 
• From your Blogger drop-down menu select Layout
• In Layout mode, you'll see several buttons in the middle of the screen that say "Add a Gadget", click that.
• A new window will pop open. Scroll down the list in that window until you see "Follow by Email" and click into that.
• From there, it's as easy as clicking save and making sure the Gadget is placed where you want it on your blog layout. DONE!
• A reply button was also added to my comments section. I've actually been trying to figure out a way to add this little button for MONTHS and finally found this post from Spice up Your Blog that made it way simple to do.

Anyway, that's all the changes so far. I know there are a few others I want to make, but I'm so happy right now just to have gotten rid of some of the clutter that was plaguing my sidebar.

• Speaking of videos, here recently I stumbled on the BAMF Girls Club on YouTube. If you are a fan of fantasy and comedy, you may like this online series. The theme is a reality show where Hermione, Katniss, Lisbeth, Buffy, Michonne, and Bella all move into a house together. The shows are only about five minutes each.  Here's the first episode.

Barcamp and I Heart Macro

Yesterday was interesting.
After many weeks to possibly months of knowing about it, I broke down yesterday morning and decided to crash Barcamp Mobile. A few of my local Twitter friends were actually putting it on and quite a few more were attending. However, since it's a "user-led conference" (meaning that the attendees are actually the speakers and presenters) I was freaking out about going.
Shortly after breakfast, the urge to go was overwhelming. So I checked with a few friends who were there to see if it was okay for me to just show up, and did. It was a super relaxed atmosphere and there were a variety of topics being discussed and presented. While some topics were geek/tech related, others were just generally interesting (like "How to Fry Anything" and "Genealogy.") All in all, it was a pretty good time. I might even come up with a presentation for next year. . .maybe.
Since I only attended the afternoon sessions and wasn't available for either of the dinners, my Barcamp experience wasn't really complete. I hear they had a lot of fun. There are barcamps all over the country, just do a search for one in your local area and you may be pleasantly surprised to find one near you. (If any of you who attended want to add anything to this, please let me know or leave additional info in the comments.)


While I should have gotten some macro shots of the fried mini Reese's, kool-aid, and Oreos; I was too busy consuming them to worry with my camera and greasy fingers!
Instead, let me show off the pretty colors that the leaves on my Crepe Myrtle have turned.

We don't get too many pretty leaves in Autumn down here. Most of the trees just stay green or instantly turn brown. So, the variety of colors right outside my front door makes me smile a little.

Let's Spice It Up With a Dash of Everything

September in the south is such a tease.
Let me just say that I LOVE the summer: being able to go to the beach all season long, warm rays on my skin, kids excited for their freedom. However, down here in Alabama it is SWELTERING HOT for 4-5 months. If you're not going to the beach, the river, or a friend's pool it's miserable to go outside. Yet, in comes September on Summer's boot heels, bringing in just a touch of cool air in the evenings. It's not quite enough to enjoy being outside, but just enough for me to start envisioning camp fires and evening walks and cozy sweaters. A TEASE I tell you!! Can you tell I'm ready for a bit of Fall-like weather?

A Feed Change (ThTh)

Okay, I need to go ahead and apologize to any of you who read my blog in a feed reader. I realized yesterday that my blog is being 'scraped' for its content. Basically, my content is being stolen. The easiest way for me to fix this (for a starter) is to shorten the feed, forcing readers to go to my site and read the entire blog post. It's all very technical. . . blah, blah, blah fancypants geek speak miscellaneous BS. Thank goodness LOML speaks geek, can translate for me, and was able to come up with this simple solution. (However, I am actually geek enough to be able to go in and change the feed setting myself.) You can thank the jackass spam blogger.
I know I don't have that many readers in the first place and the content that was stolen was not anything important (it was a post from this week.) It's a good thing I have a Google Alert set up for 'crafty hope' so I can be alerted to anything that refers to me (mostly).

I've got a meeting in Mobile tonight (for my Mardi Gras society) so I can't get into much more before going ahead and sharing my links for "Thrifty Thursday":

• Check out these yummy-looking popsicle treats from Parents.com. I'm not trally a huge fan of posicles because of my sensitive teeth. I will admit that I love pudding pops (they seem softer and melt faster, plus they are just awesome). HOWEVER, a few on this list look SOOO GOO: peanut butter and raspberry!! Ice Cream Sandwich on a Stick!! Holy cow, I'm ready to go out and buy me some of those popsicle kits. I thought they were just intended for Kool-Aid. I have been proven wrong one again.

Getting Started on the Rest of the House and TT (including some iPhone tips)

MAN!! I feel like I keep missing Mondays or something (wishful thinking maybe). I just have so much to do after a weekend that I can't seem to focus on a blog post.

I said I was going to start working on the rest of the house, and I DID get some tasks accomplished yesterday. Yay me! I decided to start in the kitchen and was able to clear off a few counters, organize under the sink, and clean out the myriad of Styrofoam boxes from the fridge. Instead of rewarding myself with crafting - I looked through some magazines and watched the Olympics WHILE finding a condo in Gulf Shores for Labor Day weekend. I did cheat and reward myself during lunch by going to a thrift store. I'll share that loot with you later.

Nerdy Nostalgia

The other evening, I was feeling quite nostalgic for some of the cheesy shows I watched in my childhood. I especially LOVED The Disney Channel. I think it had something to do with the fact that we didn't have the money for special channels like that when I was younger. I WAITED for Free Disney. Do any of you remember this? Does the cable company still do this? It was some kind of ploy to get people to subscribe to additional channels by offering those stations free for a week or weekend or something. When it was Free Disney time, I would veg out to Disney shows. My favorites were Kids Incorporated and The Mickey Mouse Club. I did finally grow up a little and stop watching these by the time the likes of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake were Club Members. Yet, I did watch Jennifer Love Hewitt on Kids Incorporated (back then, she was just Love Hewitt.) While LOML* worked to meet a deadline, I sat transfixed to YouTube watching stuff like this:

YES YES YES. . . I was a HUGE nerd back then. I guess I'm still a nerd if I was watching these just the other night. Oh well, it was a GREAT little escape back to my childhood.

It's Not Botox, But. . .

How do you like the new duds? I decided the blog needed a bit of a facelift. This is as far as I got. I'm sure there may be more to come, I might even get a new template, but I'm not sure yet. However, I am QUITE proud of myself. I know the header needs some tweaks and LOML* said he would help me and give me a tutorial to be able to get the image(s) on the header that I want. Now that I know it's so easy, you may see more and more up there.

Techie Tuesday - I'm Such a Geek

Wow! I've been so much sucking at blog posts lately!!
I've got a few things I want to share for "Techie Tuesday"Basically, they just show you how much of a geek I can be. Just in case you still have doubts, even after Friday's post with the 'Yay!' thing.

• Several of these 10 cult classic mid 80's fantasy movies are on my shortlist of favorite movies. Seriously, 'cult classic' 'mid 80's' 'fantasy movies' - AWESOME!
  
• I mentioned Battlestar Gallactica's season premiere last week, but failed to offer up this Battlestar top ten list from the David Letterman Show. If that doesn't peak your interest, I don't know what will.
• I absolutely LOVE the craftster community, especially when members share their geek love also. Since I can't knit or really crochet, these Fellowship of the Ring amigurumi are simply mystical to me. I love when craftiness and geekiness come together.
  

Alright, the next two do not illustrate the geek me, but I do want to share them. So there!

• I JUST saw this today: postcards from yo momma. It's e-mails people receive from their moms. Strangely compelling. I've even added it to my Misc links on the sidebar.

Techie Tuesday

It's time for more geeky goodness with another edition of "Techie Tuesday."

• First, an article that is a few weeks to a month old, but really excited me. I've been waiting for the release of 'Spore', a game that is being made by the same company/maker that does the SIMS. I don't know if I can explain it eloquently enough - but - you get to design your own 'creature' and place it in the online environment where it interacts with others' creatures.
